Eclipse Visualization
June 26th, 2008
A relatively widely-used IDE for Java is called Eclipse. There’s a project at UC Davis, called code_swarm, which has an interesting visualization of the development of the Eclipse IDE over the years. You can check it out here.
There are also visualizations for Python, PostgreSQL, and Apache.

Ode to the Ampersand
May 7th, 2008
Have you ever thought about the ampersand? Where did it get its shape? Why is it named that way? Well, my friends, today you’re in luck.
Jason Kottke linked to an article recently about this special character, which I found interesting enough to spend some more time reading about it on Wikipedia.
More and more as I think about web design, I find typography interesting, so that is why I would post about something like this. However, did you know that software developers frequently use the ampersand as well?
CSS Selectors Test Suite
June 25th, 2007
I’ve been a supporter of Web Standards for a long time. Today I stumbled across this test, and I thought that it was particularly telling:
Mozilla Firefox 3 alpha (nightly build of Firefox 3 - 20070625):
From the 43 selectors 32 have passed, 4 are buggy and 7 are unsupported (Passed 369 out of 578 tests)
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4:
From the 43 selectors 26 have passed, 10 are buggy and 7 are unsupported (Passed 357 out of 578 tests)
Safari 3.0.2:
From the 43 selectors 25 have passed, 9 are buggy and 9 are unsupported (Passed 346 out of 578 tests)
IE 7 (7.0.5730.11):
From the 43 selectors 13 have passed, 4 are buggy and 26 are unsupported (Passed 330 out of 578 tests)
Rumor has it though that Opera 9.5 will fully pass this test.
