Life As It Comes
Weekend of Concerts3 Comments
Last weekend, I saw Jewel, Rob Thomas, Huey Lewis and the News, and Chicago. It was good to see some live music again. It had been several weeks, and in Austin that’s far too long.
I think Jewel was by far my favorite. She rocked actually. You don’t really think of Jewel that way, but she had a good band, was having a good time, and put on a rockin’ show. She also told the crowd a story about this picture, which was far better than the way Poltz recaps it. Haha. Rob Thomas was good, and he was definitely a crowd favorite, but I think he was trying too hard with all the backup singers and flashing lights and stuff. The Rob Thomas show I was envisioning had a lot less band and a lot more Rob. He did play quite a few Matchbox Twenty songs, and that was good. That show was at The Backyard, which is a great venue.
Huey Lewis and Chicago were good shows too - enthusiastic old rockers having a good time, with much high-fiving and pointing at each other after solos. They played the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma, TX.
Now if only Howie were headed this way, with the pedals and without the band….
Foo Fighters and WeezerNo Comments
Yeah, the show was pretty rockin’ last night.
Weezer played a good first set - leading off with “My Name is Jonas,” then went off stage and came back on to a flashing logo. Then, Rivers played an acoustic “Island in the Sun” out in the crowd before the band invited someone named Mike randomly from the crowd to come up and play with them. Mike could play! Rivers kept telling him the chords, and he really kept up. It was sweet. Then, just before the finale and shooting off tons of confetti, the drummer came up and played lead guitar while all three of the other members went back to play on his set.
Foo Fighters put on a good show too. Dave Grohl was loud and hyped up. He also went out into the crowd and messed with the sound guys a little. Then, during the finale, as I had hoped, he saddled up on the drum set and played a song. Finally, the tune they finished with wasn’t one that I knew beforehand, but they made a really good finale out of it.
Definitely a great rock show.
