Life As It Comes
Why I Will Not Be Buying an iPhone (Yet)5 Comments
First of all, David Pogue’s review of the iPhone is a good one.
Here are the reasons why I will not be buying an iPhone as soon as I can get my hands on one:
1) EDGE - The first-generation iPhone supports AT&T’s outdated EDGE network exclusively. This generation will never support the faster network AT&T is currently building (and has deployed in many U.S. cities). Using the EDGE network with iPhone has been compared to using a brand-new top-of-the-line computer to connect to the internet via dial-up.
2) Flash Memory - Flash memory has been going down in price recently with many manufacturers offering 64 GB flash cards/chips suitable for sub-compact notebooks, etc. It won’t be long before an 8 GB iPhone or iPod Nano will be laughable. If the whole point of this device is to have my songs, pictures, and video on my phone, then I’d rather have most of my data on there rather than only a fraction.
3) 2.0 in the Works - I’ve heard rumors of an iPhone 2.0 as early as September/October. I’m sure that will not be the case, but they can’t be far away (maybe January for Macworld) in light of points 1 and 2.
4) Cost vs Likely Upgrade - The iPhone is an expensive gadget. Though Apple can easily attract me to this device (I really do want one), the likelihood that this generation will quickly be obsolete is high. I’d rather spend my $600 on version 2.0.
CSS Selectors Test Suite1 Comment
I’ve been a supporter of Web Standards for a long time. Today I stumbled across this test, and I thought that it was particularly telling:
Mozilla Firefox 3 alpha (nightly build of Firefox 3 - 20070625):
From the 43 selectors 32 have passed, 4 are buggy and 7 are unsupported (Passed 369 out of 578 tests)
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4:
From the 43 selectors 26 have passed, 10 are buggy and 7 are unsupported (Passed 357 out of 578 tests)
Safari 3.0.2:
From the 43 selectors 25 have passed, 9 are buggy and 9 are unsupported (Passed 346 out of 578 tests)
IE 7 (7.0.5730.11):
From the 43 selectors 13 have passed, 4 are buggy and 26 are unsupported (Passed 330 out of 578 tests)
Rumor has it though that Opera 9.5 will fully pass this test.

Can you imagine what this would be like?
The ESA (European Space Agency) is looking for recruits (pdf) to participate in a simulated trip to Mars and back by being locked up somewhere in Russia.
C|Net has more.
Old-New Pictures5 Comments
I’ve posted a lot of photos this afternoon. Please enjoy them! There are updates in three albums, but that should be noted on the Gallery page itself. These are mostly from 2005 and 2006, which means they are super-old, but it also means I’ve caught up to this year! Hooray!
Update: I’ve got Spring and Summer 2007 started as well. All that’s left to do are the vacation pictures, which I know everyone is excited to see.
Also, when you click on the photo album, if it has multiple pages, then the arrows actually on the photo will iterate through only the ones on that page. If you want to see the rest in that album, you need to click the “next” link at the top.

The new season of Man vs Wild starts tonight on the Discovery Channel.
Now, when can we expect episodes to make it to the iTunes store?
